Priv.-Doz. Dr. rer. nat. Désirée Gül

Privatdozentin Dr. rer. nat. Désirée Gül (née Wünsch) is a private lecturer and group leader at the University Medical Center Mainz, where she has been leading an independent research group since 2024. She completed her habilitation in Molecular Medicine at the University Medical Center Mainz in 2024.

Dr. Gül studied Biology at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, graduating with distinction in 2009. She subsequently obtained her PhD in Biology (summa cum laude) in 2015 at the University Medical Center Mainz. From 2015 to 2024, she served as a Junior Group Leader, establishing a strong research profile in molecular and translational medicine.

In addition to her role in Mainz, Dr. Gül has been a lecturer at the Turkish-German University in Istanbul since 2023, contributing to international academic exchange and education.

Her scientific excellence and commitment to academic development have been recognized through several prestigious appointments and awards, including a Postdoctoral Fellowship within the state program “Chancengleichheit in Forschung und Lehre” (2019–2022), membership in the Junge Akademie of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz (2016–2020), and a fellowship from the Stiftung Tumorforschung Kopf-Hals in 2013.

Dr. Gül’s work bridges basic molecular research and clinical application, with a strong focus on fostering young scientists and advancing translational medicine.

The experimental, translational research conducted by Dr. Gül´s group aims to elucidate fundamental molecular mechanisms and their deregulation in the pathogenesis of diseases. The goal is to develop a systematic understanding of molecular processes that will serve as a basis for the development of targeted intervention strategies, and novel diagnostic tools. Current research topics cover the fields of nanobiomedicine, liquid biopsy (extracellular vesicles/ circulating tumor cells), Vitamin D research, translational oncology, and chemical biomedicine. Dr. Gül´s achievements (number of publications: 42; h-Index: 15; citations: 797) were supported by independent fellowships and start-up grants (total funding received > 400,000€).

Role in the MPOIP Program

Privatdozentin Dr. rer. nat. Désirée Gül is responsible for the supervision and coordination of the experimental and laboratory workflows within the program. She also provides scientific supervision and mentoring of master’s students, particularly in the planning, execution, and evaluation of laboratory-based research projects.
