Third Semester Cohort 1
16.-21. March 2026

From 16 to 21 March 2026, the 2024–2026 cohort 1 of the MPOIP completed an intensive week at Universitätsmedizin Mainz. The week focused on advanced implantological treatment concepts, combining scientific lectures, live surgeries, case discussions, hands-on training, clinical demonstrations and practical evaluations.

The program opened with Prof. Bilal Al-Nawas, who introduced the participants to the clinical and academic objectives of the week. The first day was dedicated to Immediacy – Full Arch and covered prosthetic challenges, complication management and case discussions on overdentures with Prof. Samir Abou-Ayash. Further sessions addressed digital planning for complete-arch treatment with Dr. Morse Bayadse, intraoral scanning in complete-arch implant prosthodontics with Dr. Moataz Bayadse, as well as complex full-arch treatment concepts, computer-assisted implantology, 3D planning, CAD/CAM techniques and immediate loading protocols.

The following day focused on augmentation procedures, live surgeries and clinical case discussions. Prof. Fouad Khoury contributed his extensive surgical expertise, while Prof. Al-Nawas and Prof. E. Schiegnitz supported the clinical discussions and teaching sessions. The participants were able to connect surgical principles with real clinical decision-making and treatment planning.

On Wednesday, the cohort continued with advanced augmentation procedures. The program included an MCQ examination with Dr. Khamis and Dr. Kaya, followed by lectures and practical sessions on advanced augmentation, piezosurgery, the GalvoSurge bone block technique and augmentation peri-implantitis therapy. Prof. E. Schiegnitz, Dr. Khamis and Dr. Kaya guided the participants through the clinical and practical aspects of these treatment concepts.

Thursday was dedicated to the theoretical background and hands-on training of augmentation procedures. Elias Khoury introduced the basics of augmentation procedures, including bone techniques and split bone block concepts. Further topics included soft tissue management, vestibuloplasty, second-stage procedures, flap techniques and apical repositioning flaps. The hands-on part covered minimally invasive augmentation, bone core techniques, bone block harvesting, split bone block procedures and stabilisation with microscrews.

On Friday, the focus shifted to sedation and pain management. Prof. Peer Kämmerer led the sessions on anaesthesia, pain management, emergency and complication management, sedation and nitrous oxide hands-on training. Prof. Dr. Karl Martin Lehmann added an important restorative perspective with a lecture on aesthetic complex restorative therapy. The day also included an M.Sc. evaluation and MCQ examination with Prof. Al-Nawas and Dr. Khamis.

The final day concentrated on sinus lift procedures. Prof. Al-Nawas covered personalised therapy, the basics of sinus lift, surgical techniques, advanced concepts and complication management. The practical part included sinus lift augmentation, external sinus lift and internal sinus lift procedures.
