Second Semester Cohort 2
23.-27. March 2026

From 23 to 28 March 2026, the second semester of the MPOIP programme took place in Mainz and Lindau. The week brought together lectures, clinical discussions, live surgery, hands-on sessions and examinations, with a clear focus on periodontal therapy, implant-prosthetic concepts and the treatment of compromised patients.

The programme started in Mainz with periodontology basics under the direction of Prof. Bilal Al-Nawas. The opening day focused on scientific work, non-surgical periodontal therapy and surgical periodontal therapy. Dr. Anna Damanaki, Dr. A. Khamis and Dr. Sebhat Kaya guided the participants through theoretical and practical aspects of periodontal diagnostics and treatment.

On the second day, the focus moved further into surgical periodontology. Dr. Adriano Azaripour and Prof. James Deschner contributed lectures on periodontal therapy, the etiopathogenesis of periodontitis and periodontal histology. The afternoon was dedicated to hands-on surgical periodontal therapy and practical clinical evaluation.

Wednesday was centred on prosthetic and implant-prosthetic treatment concepts, especially in medically compromised patients. A live operation with Prof. Schiegnitz, moderated by Dr. Bayase and Dr. Khamis, provided direct clinical insight. Prof. Samir Abou-Ayash then led sessions on implant-prosthetic treatment concepts and the digital workflow in mini-implant therapy. The day concluded with hands-on mini-implant training and a practical evaluation.

Thursday added further clinical depth with sedation, PRF and systemic considerations. Prof. Kämmerer lectured on local anesthesia, sedation and pre-operative pain management. Prof. Keyvan Sagheb covered PRF theory, while Prof. James Deschner addressed the relationship between periodontitis and systemic diseases. In the afternoon, participants took part in PRF hands-on training with Prof. Keyvan Sagheb, Prof. Walter and Dr. Sebhat Kaya before travelling to Lindau.

The final two days in Lindau, hosted with P. R. Nölken, focused on immediate implant placement, soft-tissue management and implant therapy in compromised clinical situations. The programme included live surgery, lectures and practical sessions on the use of implants in the distal lower jaw, OsseoSpeed systems, Zeiss microscopes, tunnel techniques, roll-flap procedures, digital workflows and peri-implantitis therapy concepts.

A particular highlight was the combination of scientific input and direct clinical application. The participants were able to discuss complex cases, observe surgical procedures and practise relevant techniques in hands-on settings. The contributions of Prof. Bilal Al-Nawas, Prof. James Deschner, Prof. Schiegnitz, Prof. Samir Abou-Ayash, Prof. Kämmerer, Prof. Keyvan Sagheb and Prof. Walter shaped the academic and clinical quality of the week.
