Dr. Burwinkel studied Dentistry at the University of Bonn and completed his state examination in dentistry at the end of 1990. In 1991, he earned his doctoral degree (specializing in Urology/Urinary Stone Analysis).
From 1991 to 1996, he worked as a research associate at the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Periodontology at the Center for Dental, Oral, and Maxillofacial Diseases at the University of Bonn. He then spent two years as an employed dentist in a private oral surgery and periodontology practice in Münster.
In 1998, he continued his advanced training at the Department of Dental Surgery at the Clinic for Dental, Oral, and Maxillofacial Diseases at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Since 2001, he has been a specialized dentist in Oral Surgery and, since 2012, has served as the Senior Physician of the outpatient clinic and radiology department.
Since 1999, Dr. Burwinkel has been a member of the examination committee for the dental examination in the field of Radiology and Radiation Protection. He is also a member of the Working Group on Oral Surgery, the DGZMK (German Society for Dental, Oral, and Maxillofacial Medicine), and the Working Group on Imaging in Dentistry, as well as a certified member of the German Society for Implantology.
Since 2001, he has been a lecturer on the topics of Dental Radiology and Dental Surgery in patients with hemorrhagic diathesis. Since 2007, he has served as the lead lecturer and head of the CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) specialist course at University Medical Center Mainz and the Rhineland-Palatinate State Dental Association.
As of September 2021, Dr. Burwinkel has held the position of Senior Physician at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Oral, Maxillofacial, and Facial Surgery and serves as the Head of the Dental Radiology Section at the ZMK Clinic of University Medical Center Mainz.
